ABSTRACT DIGESTS

× In this second edition of South Asia Nutrition Knowledge Initiative’s Abstract Digest, we present insights from new global evidence on the double burden of underweight and obesity, interventions to improve women's diets, policy challenges related to unhealthy food and beverage marketing to children, and facilitators and barriers to implementing community-based interventions for addressing acute malnutrition in in low and middle-income countries.

× The 49th issue of Abstract Digest features a set of studies on child growth, including patterns of child stunting in low- and middle-income countries, various forms of inequities in child growth, and the role of milk in child growth. It also includes studies on obesity in India and the double burden of malnutrition. Anemia is also highlighted in this issue, with one article presenting a framework on integrated action for anemia and the other exploring the timely diagnosis of anemia. This edition also presents various studies examining the factors associated with coverage of antenatal coverage, with maternal behavior change, with kangaroo mother care, and with breastfeeding practices. Two articles focus on frontline workers, and there is a systematic review that examines dietary diversity and undernutrition among school children. Moreover, this issue features authors’ correspondence and responses in The Lancet on gender sensitivity in the National Family Health Surveys.

× The 48th issue of Abstract Digest features studies on anemia highlighting trends, inequities, and determinants of anemia among various population groups. Another study examined micronutrient deficiencies and their association with cognitive function among children and adolescents. This issue also includes the latest Lancet 2023 Breastfeeding Series editorial and three-papers that outline the multifaceted and highly effective strategies used by commercial formula manufacturers to target parents, health-care professionals, and policy-makers. Other studies included are on patterns in the prevalence of unvaccinated children, variations in measures of poverty, and an assessment of progress on the sustainable development goals. Another study examined the validity of maternal reports of receiving counseling on infant and young child feeding, and yet another one examined utilization of systematic review-based evidence in formulating guidelines for the National Health Programme.

× Season’s greetings! The 47th issue of POSHAN’s Abstract Digest features studies on maternal nutrition, anemia, and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices. The maternal nutrition articles include a modeling study that examines the importance of prenatal nutrition for reducing the global burden of non-communicable diseases, and a gap analysis study to identify key elements to strengthen maternal nutrition counselling during routine health services. There are two anemia articles: one examines the association of adolescent anemia and physical growth with learning outcomes, while the other investigates the prevalence and determinants of anemia among men. Among the two articles covering IYCF practices, one assesses food group consumption patterns among children in 59 countries and the other investigates the association between IYCF practices and nutrition indicators. Other interesting studies in this issue include two articles based on learnings from interventions through women’s self-help groups, an assessment of anthropometric data quality in India’s National Family Health Survey, another on implementation characteristics of father-inclusive interventions in low- and middle-income countries, and one on the perceptions, risk factors, and behaviors of overweight adults.

× Issue 46 of the POSHAN Abstract Digest brings to you yet another collection of articles on various maternal and child nutrition topics. This issue features studies on the prevalence and impact of anaemia in adolescents, an ecological analysis of child undernutrition and overweight, micronutrient supplementation and linear growth, diets, diet quality, and dietary diversity. growth. This issue also include two studies- one on cost-consequence analyses and another on the process evaluation-based on nutrition-sensitive agriculture interventions implemented in Odisha to improve maternal and child health nutrition. Other interesting studies included in this issue are on birthweight data quality, decentralization in the Integrated Child Development Services, use of digital technology to improve service delivery, and changes to service delivery in multiple states across India during COVID-19.

× In this 45th issue of the POSHAN Abstract Digest, we bring you a collection of articles on child, adolescent, and maternal malnutrition. It features studies on micronutrient deficiencies and on anemia among adolescents, inequities in undernutrition among children, and inequities in overweight and obesity among women. It also features an evaluation study of self-group-based behavior change intervention in rural India and its impacts on multiple maternal and child outcomes, and a comprehensive review of smartphone applications delivering child nutrition information.

× Issue 44 of the POSHAN Abstract Digest, brings to you yet another collection of articles on various topics pertaining to maternal and child nutrition. This issue features several studies on the nutritional status of adolescents and the relationship between maternal dietary diversity and body composition with children’s health. A few studies look at coverage of nutrition and health interventions in the country, including the Anemia Mukt Bharat program and the National Rural Health mission.

× In this 43rd issue of the POSHAN Abstract Digest, we bring to you a collection of interesting articles on various topics pertaining to maternal and child nutrition. This short issue features studies that assess annual trends in wasting and anemia among children under the age of 5 years using national survey data, the relationship of anthropometric failure with child mortality, and the effectiveness of participatory women’s groups scaled up by the public health system to improve birth outcomes. There are also two studies focusing on the role of community health workers (CHWs), namely in providing maternal nutrition counselling to improve child nutrition, and the effect of home visits on infant health.

× In this 42nd issue of the POSHAN Abstract Digest, we bring to you a collection of interesting articles on various topics pertaining to maternal and child nutrition, impact of COVID-19 on food insecurity, as well as modeling and experimental studies. This issue features studies on gaps in maternal diets, the role of complementary feeding in high child malnutrition rates, the importance of animal source foods for linear growth, maternal mental health and its relationship with child undernutrition. Two validation studies, one focused on validating a novel diet quality score in southern India, and one that validates a new indicator to measure coverage of quality of antenatal care, are also included.

× The 41st issue of POSHAN Abstract Digest brings to you yet again a tailored set of articles on malnutrition in India. This issue features a studies examining trends in nutrition outcomes, inequities associated with anthropometric failure, and role of WASH in addressing undernutrition. In addition, this issue also features articles on the intergenerational benefits of India’s national school feeding program, effect of women’s labor force participation on nutrition, and the role of maternal empowerment and paternal gender-equitable attitudes on stunting.

× In this 40th issue of the POSHAN Abstract Digest, we bring to you a collection of articles on the burden of malnutrition in India, its distribution patterns and determinants. You will find several articles focused on nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive solutions aimed at improving nutritional outcomes and determinants. This issue also features two articles on data for nutrition, one pertaining to data availability for nutrition financing in India and another describing the current situation of reliable biomarker data availability on micronutrient deficiencies at the global level. We have also included a small section on COVID-19 focused peer-reviewed articles.

× Once again, the POSHAN Abstract Digest brings to you a tailored set of articles on issues pertaining to undernutrition in India and its solutions. Issue 39 features a series of studies that look into the trends and variability in inequality linked with child mortality, stunting, and the double burden of malnutrition. You will also find articles on the association between women’s empowerment and child health, a systematic review of enablers and barriers to improving IYCF practices, and an evaluation of global experiences in large-scale double-fortified salt programs. In this issue we have included peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed COVID-19 related articles, and a special section on the Ananya program, a multi-component, multi-year initiative implemented in Bihar to improve reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition.

× Issue 38 of the Abstract Digest brings to you a series of studies on nutrition outcomes, including prevalence of stunting and its association with women’s empowerment, nutrients in complementary feeding, and the impact of nutritional interventions among lactating mothers. In this issue we have also included two special sections. One features COVID-19 related studies and blogs, and the other features studies that have used the recently released National Family Health Survey-5 data.

× Issue 37 of the Abstract Digest brings to you a set of global, regional, and India-focused articles on issues pertaining to undernutrition and its solutions. Global studies include the Optima Nutrition modelling assessing the likelihood of 129 countries reaching the global nutrition targets by 2030, a systematic review of economic evaluation of interventions to address undernutrition by scaling up proven interventions and identifying priority interventions, a study that identifies research priorities for social, behavioral and community engagement interventions for maternal and child health, and a review of literature on social accountability approaches. India-specific studies examine inequality in child undernutrition among urban populations, the economic feasibility of nutritionally adequate diets, and two studies focusing on frontline workers time use and factors influencing their performance. In this edition we have also included implementation research focused articles relevant for maternal and child health programs.

× This issue of Abstract Digest brings to you a set of interesting articles on stunting burden, drivers, and learnings from countries that have been successful in reducing stunting, including a case study on Chhattisgarh. In addition, there are studies on anthropometric data quality assessment, and a study describing the health system components required for the delivery of nutrition-specific interventions. This issue also includes studies on COVID-19 and its implications for child nutrition. In this edition, we have included a Call for Action issued by leaders of four UN agencies to protect children's right to nutrition in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. In India, a diverse group of nutrition stakeholders have pledged their renewed Commitment to Action for supporting efforts by the government and all of society.
