POSHAN’s abstract digest on maternal and child nutrition research - Issue 47

Season’s greetings! The 47th issue of POSHAN’s Abstract Digest features studies on maternal nutrition, anemia, and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices. The maternal nutrition articles include a modeling study that examines the importance of prenatal nutrition for reducing the global burden of non-communicable diseases, and a gap analysis study to identify key elements to strengthen maternal nutrition counselling during routine health services. There are two anemia articles: one examines the association of adolescent anemia and physical growth with learning outcomes, while the other investigates the prevalence and determinants of anemia among men. Among the two articles covering IYCF practices, one assesses food group consumption patterns among children in 59 countries and the other investigates the association between IYCF practices and nutrition indicators. Other interesting studies in this issue include two articles based on learnings from interventions through women’s self-help groups, an assessment of anthropometric data quality in India’s National Family Health Survey, another on implementation characteristics of father-inclusive interventions in low- and middle-income countries, and one on the perceptions, risk factors, and behaviors of overweight adults.

POSHAN's abstract digest on maternal and child nutrition research - Issue 32

We are delighted to present the first issue of Abstract Digest for this year. It has a collection of articles on various outcomes, determinants and interventions related to maternal and child nutrition, from around the world and India, in particular. In this issue, we feature a special series on the double burden of malnutrition from The Lancet journals and three systematic reviews – 1. Micronutrient supplementation and fortification interventions and health and developmental outcomes; 2. Effectiveness of interventions for managing acute malnutrition among children below five years; and 3. Preventive interventions among adolescents. In addition, there are two unique global articles relevant for multiple contexts – the first one generates lessons about nutrition behaviour change from cluster-randomized evaluations in three countries, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Ethiopia; and the second is based on research to improve nutrition in the context of an at-scale social protection program in Mexico, which has learnings for many developing countries. Given below is the list of articles included in this issue. Please click on the title if you wish to go straight to the article or scroll down to explore the abstract in the pages that follow.

The trade-off between short-term welfare and long-term agricultural development in the highlands of Ethiopia represents a challenge to successful economic development in a predominantly agriculture-based economy. We employ nearest neighbor and kernel-based matching techniques to measure the impact of sustainable land and watershed management (SLWM) on the value of production at the plot level. Analysis suggests that plots that received SLWM investments (terraces, bunds, check dams) within the first study period (1992–2002) had a 24 per cent higher value of production in 2010. In addition, continuous treatment effects analysis provides a robustness check and suggests that plots with existing SLWM infrastructure have a positive and increasing value of production seven years after construction. Although value of production increases over time, net benefits may not outweigh costs, and mechanisms to incentivize maintenance may be needed.

POSHAN’s abstract digest on maternal and child nutrition research – Issue 7

The potential impacts of investing in drought tolerant maize (DTM) in 13 countries of eastern, southern and western Africa were analyzed through an innovative economic surplus analysis framework, to identify where greatest economic returns and poverty reduction may be achieved. Assuming a potential full replacement of improved varieties with DTM varieties, by 2016 there would be economic gains of US$ 907 million over all countries under conservative yield gains, or US$ 1,535 million under optimistic yield gains. Largest gains in terms of consumer and producers surplus are in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Malawi. However, in terms of production gains and poverty reduction, the countries gaining most are Nigeria, Kenya and Malawi (in terms of production); and Zimbabwe, Malawi and Kenya (number of people out of poverty). A total of 4 million people — both producers and consumers— would have their poverty greatly reduced in all countries. To achieve these impacts, deployment strategies are discussed and various options are suggested, which depend on local context and state of the national seed sectors.
