Assam, situated in the north-east of India, accounts for 2.4 percent of the area of the country and includes 33 districts (Government of Assam 2017). The state is home to more than 31 million people (2.5 percent of the population of India), of which 72.2 percent are literate. Assam has a sex ratio of 958 females per 1,000 males (Census of India 2017). The state is largely forested and is culturally diverse with over 24 tribal groups (Assam State Biodiversity Board 2017).
