Maharashtra, situated in the western region of India, has a long coastline. It is the third largest state in the country with an area of about 0.3 million square kilometers and a population of approximately 110 million. The state has a literacy rate of 82 percent (Census of India 2011). The state is divided into 36 districts in six divisions (Konkan, Nashik, Pune, Aurangabad, Amravati and Nagpur) (Government of Maharashtra 2017).
